It was an exciting month with the kids starting at the new studio and the Van Gogh 360 degrees showing in the city.
We decided to start our new term with colourful art inspired by Van Gogh. We adorned our studio walls with prints of the artist. It was such a natural fit as we were studying lines in art and the drawings and paintings of Van Gogh exemplified it so beautifully!
Our kinders created expressive portraits using clay in relief, and etched the lines using clay tools. They also made their interpretation of his flower paintings – not only Sunflowers.
Lower Elementary composed their own pictures inspired by the Sunflowers and learnt a new technique – glue line paintings. They also made a diorama based on Van Gogh’s association with the postman – Roulin’s Family.
Colours were a very important part of Van Gogh’s art and his palette changed as he moved to different cities around Europe. Students of the Upper Elementary explored the colours and made their own paintings incorporating the strokes of Van Gogh to paint a place they remembered, using their own unique palette.
All through the month they viewed videos, read about his life and empathized with the artist’s condition.
