Introduction to Charcoal Portraiture:
Charcoal, with its rich and velvety texture, has been a favorite among artists for centuries. Its versatility allows for both bold strokes and subtle shading, making it an ideal medium for creating captivating portraits.

Reference photo (bring a printed photo of your loved one or select an image from the internet)

Procedure:

Choosing Your Reference Photo:
Experiment with charcoal pencils and vine charcoal to build up the dark and light values in your portrait.
Focus on capturing the shadows and highlights that give depth to the face.

Blending Techniques:
Employ blending stumps or tortillons to soften transitions between different tones.
Create smooth gradations and textures for a lifelike effect or free strokes to create an experimental effect.

Detailing and Refinement:
Use compressed charcoal for finer details and precise lines.
Pay attention to facial expressions, eyes, and other distinctive features.

Correcting and Enhancing:
Use a kneaded eraser to lift off charcoal for highlights or make corrections.
Add or refine details as needed.

Finalizing Your Portrait:
Step back and evaluate your work.
Make any final adjustments to ensure a well-balanced and visually appealing portrait.

Taking Home Your Masterpiece:
Once you’re satisfied with your charcoal portrait, spray it.
Your creation will be ready to be framed and hung, serving as a cherished memento or a unique piece of art.
Join us in this exciting class to explore the expressive world of charcoal portraiture. Whether it’s a loved one or an inspiring image, you’ll learn techniques to create a beautiful, framed portrait that captures the essence of your subject.
