Course Synopsis

This 12-week course is designed for those who want to learn painting properly — with time, depth, and experimentation — rather than rushing through quick outcomes.
Using acrylic paint as the core medium, students explore how paintings are built layer by layer, learning to work with colour, surface, texture, and composition in a supportive studio environment.

The course follows a 2-week-per-project structure, allowing space for:

  • Experimentation
  • Skill-building
  • Reflection
  • Refinement

This pace encourages deeper understanding and visible artistic growth.

What You Will Learn

Each term is built around project cycles that gradually expand technical skills and creative development. You’ll receive guidance, support, and exposure to contemporary and historical art practices through:

  • Acrylic paint handling— from thin washes to thick impasto
  • Colour mixing, harmony, and palette control
  • Brush and palette knife techniques
  • Underpainting, glazing, and layered painting processes
  • Texture creation using gels and mixed-media materials
  • Compositional thinking and visual balance
  • Translating ideas, references, and emotions into finished artworks

PROJECTS COVERED

Over 12 weeks, students complete six structured painting projects::

  • Still Life
  • Floral Abstract Painting
  • Landscape / Seascape
  • Expressive Figurative Painting
  • Portrait Painting
  • Narrative Painting (multi-figure composition)

Each project begins with a shared brief, but every student develops a highly individual outcome—no two works look alike.

THE STUDIO EXPERIENCE

By the end of the course, students will have:

  • Learning through live demonstrations, guided exploration, and studio dialogue
  • Access to a shared studio material library
  • Emphasis on process, observation, and decision-making
  • No copying-based instruction
  • No formula-driven results

Students leave with 6 completed artworks and a clear understanding of how paintings are built, not just how they look.
This approach builds confidence, originality, and long-term artistic independence.

MATERIAL & MEDIA ACCESS

Students will experiment with a wide range of materials, including:

  • Acrylic paints & inks
  • Gel mediums and texture pastes
  • Palette knives and varied mark-making tools
  • Charcoal, oil pastels, and collage materials

(Detailed material information is shared upon enrollment.)

WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR:

    Students experiment with:

  • Adults who have always wanted to paint but didn’t know where to begin
  • Artists returning to practice after a break
  • Students who want to move beyond “safe” or decorative work
  • Anyone seeking structured, studio-based art learning

No prior drawing or painting experience required, just dedication and a desire to grow.
